The City of Sioux Center is enhancing pedestrian safety with new, flashing crossing signals on Highway 75 near the post office and 1st Street West.
Prior to crossing, pedestrians push a button to activate the signs’ bright lights, which flash in an irregular pattern like emergency vehicle lights, making them very noticeable to traffic.
“Pedestrian safety is an ongoing priority for the city and for our community,” said city utilities engineer Matt Van Schouwen. "These signals have been suggested by our traffic engineers as a very effective technology to use at pedestrian crossings.”
Other pedestrian crossings along Highway 75 are marked with bright, reflective signs.
Drivers must yield to pedestrians crossing a roadway in a crosswalk.
