Change in Hy-Vee plans Creates New Development Opportunity

The Sioux Center City Council approved a request from Hy-Vee to end Hy-Vee’s purchase agreement for the former hospital site at the council meeting Thursday.

At the council meeting, Sioux Center Community Development Director Dennis Dokter said Hy-Vee indicated a change in plans to remodel its existing Sioux Center store rather than build new.

"We had been excited to work with Hy-Vee and would have liked to see that project go through, but with a growing community like ours, we think this property represents a great opportunity for development," said City Manager Scott Wynja.

Dokter said city planners will be deliberate as they consider plans for this centrally-located property.

"It’s a great site with great potential, right in the heart of our community," Dokter said. "When we took the hospital down we knew this would be a prime location for development."

Dokter said the city has received inquiries about the site, which is zoned for highway commercial development.

"We are looking at the highest and best use for this property," Dokter said. "We want to do the right thing for our community."
